Wildfires are awful, but they do produce some pretty incredible scientific things... Like their own thunderstorms!
Colorado's Pine Gulch Fire is producing its own lightning bolts, according to the National Weather Service.
According to Out There Colorado;
The lightning is a product of something called a "pyrocumulus cloud," also known as a "flammagenitus cloud." According to the National Weather Service, "a pyrocumulus cloud forms if there is enough moisture and atmospheric instability over the intense heat source."
These clouds aren't common but can produce lightning and precipitation if they grow large enough. It's also worth noting that these massive clouds can either help or hurt the firefighting situation. If the cloud produces rain, that can be a good thing, while lightning can spark another blaze.
